Virginia Brockwell

How long have you been in the industry?  31 years – I started when I was ten….

What is your current position and employer? I am an Allstate agent – my husband and I own Anderson Brockwell Agency Inc.  In the near future we will be selling the agency and moving to Florida to be closer to my son and parents.  There I want to learn another part of our industry, hopefully underwriting or risk management.

How long did it take you to obtain your CPCU? About 20 years.  I started when my son was 2 and it was difficult to study so I decided to take a year off.  20 years later I found out I could keep most of the credits I had earned and completed it in 2018.  Old dogs CAN learn new tricks!  HAHA!

What do you like most about your job?  I have always loved solving problems and educating people.  It’s a great feeling when you come across someone who has the bare minimum, doesn’t understand how it all works and you can get them the right protection and help them to understand why it is so important.  I also like being able to be there for someone when they need us.  We make an incredible difference and we often lose sight of that.

Why or how did you start in the insurance industry?  I was right out of college with my fancy dancy liberal arts degree and was having a terrible time finding a job that paid a living wage.  I responded to an ad for an entry level insurance adjuster with Federated Mutual Insurance Company.  I thought it sounded absolutely terrible but they paid $20,000 a year!! I decided to give it a shot and fell in love with the job, the company and the people there.  I stayed there for almost 14 years.

Do you have any advice for anyone thinking of getting the designation? Absolutely do it and do it now.  Even if you are thinking of leaving the industry, it counts and shows commitment, brains and ethics.  Don’t be intimidated and try to design your preparation for the test based on how you learn, i.e. auditory, visual or both.

What book did you read last? Detective at the Doorstep by Officer Tim Cotton (the guy that writes the Facebook posts for Bangor Maine police department)

What is your favorite restaurant? The Boathouse

What college/university did you attend? Mary Washington College (now known as University of Mary Washington)

Tell us something about yourself outside of your insurance career.  I love learning new things.   When my son moved out, I turned his bedroom into an art room.  I have been taking online courses in painting and have been decorating the office bathroom with them.  (No one has high expectations of bathroom art!)
