Don Bragg

How long have you been in the industry?

I have been in the insurance industry since I graduated from college in 1977.

What is your current position and employer?

I have held various positions with a few different companies, but at present I am the Director of Membership and Marketing at the Independent Insurance Agents of Virginia (IIAV).

How long did it take you to obtain your CPCU?

When I was taking the CPCU courses I was alternating it with classes toward my MBA so it took me six years to get the designation.

What do you like most about your job?

I get to interact with the agents I have developed a relationship with over many years as well as tell the benefits of being a member of the association to new agents as well.

Why or how did you start in the insurance industry?

When I graduated from college I was not really sure what field of business I would go into, but at the time I had a very good friend in the insurance industry and she gave me a referral into insurance and that is where I landed.

Do you have any advice for anyone thinking of getting the designation?

I encourage everyone to continue to learn throughout their career. Education is something you should do for yourself to become the best you can at what you do and that is something that no-one can take away from you.

What book did you read last?

I like read self-improvement and motivation books, so the last one I read was Succeed on your own terms by Herb Greenburg and Patrick Sweeny.

What is your favorite restaurant?

Wow. That is tough, I like food so there are lots, but I like find little locally run restaurants like Croakers in Virginia Beach.

What college/university did you attend?

I have my undergraduate degree in Business from the University of Richmond and my Masters from James Madison University.

Tell us something about yourself outside of your insurance career.

I love doing things outside. Given the chance I will be floating down a river somewhere in a kayak!
