1.         How long have you been in the industry?  Approximately 22 years.

2.         What is your current position and employer?  Senior Vice President of Underwriting with Kinsale Insurance Company.  I oversee Kinsale’s Professional Liability, Management Liability and Public Entity Divisions.

3.         How long did it take you to obtain your CPCU?  My exams were spread across 20 years.  Between family/career, there were a few pauses during the process.

4.         What do you like most about your job?  Observing how current events constantly impact our industry and help to spur or limit business opportunities.

5.         Why or how did you start in the insurance industry?  Fresh out of college, a friend told me about a job opening at an insurance company in Richmond where he worked.  I consider myself very lucky to have been hired there as I met many people that were a positive influence.  I still work with many of those same people today although at a different company.  During college, I recall telling a professor that I did not see myself ever working in insurance.  I am glad I was wrong.

6.         Do you have any advice for anyone thinking of getting the designation?  I understand some individuals may wish to do a “cramming” approach to obtain a passing score.  Don’t short-change yourself in this way when it comes to the CPCU designation.  For each covered topic there is a lot of helpful information that you can apply on the job and over the course of your career.  This is balanced with my other piece of advice to try to take as many courses as you can early in your career before work, family and other obligations create a very busy schedule.  The earlier you can take advantage of the experience and earn the designation, the earlier you make a positive impact on your career development.  Do it!

7.         What book did you read last?   “Uncivil Warriors” by Peter Charles Hoffer.  The book details the role lawyers played during and immediately following the Civil War as both the Union and the Confederacy addressed many new legal issues that arose during this time in our nation’s history.

8.         What is your favorite restaurant?  Mission Barbecue. In my opinion, the best barbecue in town.

9.         What college/university did you attend?  Virginia Commonwealth University

10.     Tell us something about yourself outside of your insurance career.  During 2019, I will be celebrating 20 years of marriage.  My wife and I have three great kids that love life but not cleaning up their rooms.  My latest hobby is flying our drone to take pictures/video of points of interest across the Commonwealth and beyond
