  1. How long have you been in the industry?  Since 1982

  2. What is your current position and employer?  Chief Claims Officer for Berkley Mid-Atlantic Group

  3. How long did it take you to obtain your CPCU? It took me 6 years, receiving the designation in 1990.  There were 10 parts when I took the exams, and I paced myself at 2 per year but got behind a year when our first child was born.

  4. What do you like most about your job?  In Claims, it’s something new every day.  Even after 36 years in the business, I continue to learn and grow from new experiences.  The job is intellectually stimulating and rewarding.

  5. Why or how did you start in the insurance industry?  I started straight out of college, hired at a Job Fair on campus.  I didn’t know much about insurance and even less about Claims, but it was hard to pass up an offer that included a company car  (1981 Chevy Citation!)

  6. Do you have any advice for anyone thinking of getting the designation?  Start early and persevere.  It’s not easy, but this designation prepares you more than any other for thinking at higher level when working in our industry.  I directly attribute my career advancement to what I learned in CPCU.

  7. What book did you read last?  “This Idea is Brilliant:  Lost, Overlooked, and Underappreciated Scientific Concepts Everyone Should Know”

  8. What is your favorite restaurant?  It’s a tie:  L’Opossum in Oregon Hill and Joe’s Inn in the Fan.

  9. What college/university did you attend?  The Pennsylvania State University

  10. Tell us something about yourself outside of your insurance career.  My wife and I have been married one week longer than my career in Claims.  Our wedding date was the weekend between college graduation and the start of my first post-college job in Philadelphia. We have two daughters, a Regional Director for Orange Theory Fitness in Tampa, Florida and an Archaeologist at Columbia University in NYC.  I’ve lived in 7 states and have spent meaningful time in 44 states (with Florida and New York at the top of the favorites list!)
